Fixators that are connected or screwed into bone are usually removed under sedation. It can be the type of sedation where the child is put to sleep, or a shot that numbs the area. If the fixator goes through the bone it is usually removed under sedation. If the fixator is just screwed into the bone, it will get loose over time as the bone heals. In this case the child is just given a shot to numb the area and the fixator is just unscrewed. There is not real pain to the child except for the shot.
