hip/pelvic and back pain

I have pain at the top of my pelvic bone on the left side. It hurts almost all the time but it doesn't really bother me too much unless I stretch to the right or if I sit for a while.  When I sit for a while it will start to ache more and then it will turn into shooting pain that either goes around the whole pelvic bone on that side down to the hip or around to the lower back.  any ideas of what this is and what to do for it?  If I take ibuprophen or naproxen it will feel better for a while but it comes back.

I forgot to add that it also sometimes hurts if I sleep on my left side.  I will wake up in the middle of the night with pain.

Have you tried chiropractic therapy. Your back may be out some causing pulling on the muscles and tissues resulting in the pain. Going and getting adjusted should bring relief fairly quick depending on how bad you are out of place. I should also add that since the ibu. and nap. work you are having swelling of the tissues which also points to being out of place. Best wishes.

Well, without an evaluation, it would be difficult to point out the cause of discomfort in your case. A few possibilities include infections/ inflammations, fractures, nerve impingement/ pressure, ligament/ muscle/ tendon injuries, referred pain from other sites etc. Aside the orthopedic and related reasons, pain in the region can be caused due to renal or GI issues as well. It would be best to get this evaluated by a primary care physician initially. Later depending on the suspected/ diagnosed cause, it can be managed appropriately or specialist care sought.
