how long for growth plate to heal

how long for growth plate to heal

My 13yo twisted her ankle in soccer almost exactly a year ago.  There was nothing on xray and they assumed it was a fractured growth plate in her ankle and put her in a cast for 8 weeks.  She has a habit of always being "injured" for sympathy, very dramatic.  I don't want to assume that this is it, but her orthopedist said everything looked good and should be fine, especially since she was immobolized for a full 8 weeks,  Now a year later she STILL says her foot hurts her all the time and wants to stay home from school, and i just need to know what is the maximum time for this to heal, is she milking it?

Hello!

I would suggest you to follow up for an MRI to diagnose any soft tissue involvement. At her age and after 8 weeks of cast she will not have any problem with her bone and it might have recovered. If there is some ligament or tendon involvement it is taking time and for this you would need to diagnose it properly.

Make her wear proper foot wear, apply ice packs after she plays her sport and also give her intermittent NSAIDs.

With rest followed by physiotherapy she has to recover without any major pathology in 2-3 months.

Take care!
