large, painless bump on knee

Hi,
I have a painless, relatively hard lump on the outside of my right knee.  It only really caused  me discomfort about three years ago after playing tennis for a long period---it throbbed for a day or two, I guess because of the pounding on the hard surface.  Otherwise, I cycle, run on a trendmill and use the rowing machine fairly frequently with no problem.  I've had this "bump" for five years or so.  I used to do quite a bit of road running 10-15 years ago, maybe 20 miles a week.  I'm 50 and have limited the running to the trendmill so I haven't pounded any hard surfaces lately.

When I bend my knee, the lump quite of "clicks".  Is this a bone spur?  Should I think about having it removed?  It has been pretty constant size wise as to appear as if it is a natural "part" of my knee.
Should I just leave it alone?

thanks for you thoughts

Hi, As it is there for around 5 years or so without pain and not interfering in the joint mobility much you can also ignore for some more time,  if it is cosmetically worrisome then consult an orthopedician ,go in for x-ray and further investigations as required by him.

Hi,
It is impossible to diagnose your problem because it requires a clinical evaluation. Do consult an orthopedician.
Probably could be an synovial effusion in the setting of arthritis.

correction:  the knee makes a "clicking" sound when I bend it.  No pain, just a weird sound and feeling.
