meniscus tear - preferred treatement

My MRI for left knee indicated the following:

- Focal oblique tear abutting the inferior articular surface of the posterior horn of the medial meniscus
- Grade 2/3 chondromalacia patella
- Tiny joint effusion
- Grade 1 MCL strain
- ACL strain

What is the normal method of treatment?  My doctor suggested surgery to "cut away" the tear.  However I would rather have it heal on it's own.  Is this possible?  And is this tear in the "right" zone to surgerically repair?

Thank-you.
