no swelling but a small lump, Bursitis?

by m12mary34, Dec 19, 2008 07:49PM
I'm an active young female adult. I have noticed for approx. four months now a lump on the top left side of my patella. Pain increases after physical activity (but not all the time), walking for about 45 minutes or being in the cold. The pain includes a medium to high pressure around the area, a feeling of pins and needles from the knee up the thigh which induces muscle stiffness.I also cant kneel on my knee b/c i feel like it might burst (but it never has). When i feel it begin to hurt i always ice, rest and take an anti inflammatory. I have been researching what the possible causes could be and i came up with prepatellar bursitis. I'm questioning this though b/c i didnt read anyone having some of my listed symptoms. Also all the photos of the bursitis of others were very noticable and large, the lump on my knee is only visible when i manipulate my skin and it is approximately 4inches long by 1/2 an inch thick. I hesitate to see a doctor because it doesn't hurt all the time, but my question is, could this be bursitis or something else and should i go see a doctor?
