persistent knee and hip pain

by talk2rye, Oct 09, 2009 06:22PM
i am a 23yr old male in good health, about 145 lbs. i joined the army earlier this year and shipped to basic august 4th. about 7 weeks into bct, i noticed a pain in my groin area. at first, i thought i had pulled a muscle and waited about 6 days before going to see the medic. the doctor i ended up seeing ordered me to undergo an MRI to check for any stress fractures. the MRI showed marrow edema on the left femoral neck and the left proximal femur. i was sent home for 30 days to recover and am due back next week. my situation hasn't improved much. i cant run and have moderate pain that comes and goes from my hip that was injured. on top of that, my left knee has really been bothering me as well. going upstairs and sitting for prolonged periods of time cause a great deal of pain. i told the doctor who was treating me for my hip and he ordered an x-ray to check for arthritis and didn't find any. an MRI was never done, but my knee (like my hip) has not improved since my 30 day leave began. the pain feels like it is coming mostly from the top of the kneecap. can the pain in my knee be a result from my hip injury or are they 2 separate issues? also, what time frame am i looking at as far as recovery goes? i'm worried about not being able to complete training and will be discharged out of the army. any responses are appreciated.

Hello!

You have to recollect if you had any fall, injury which is causing this.

You can also go for an MRI of your knee to diagnose any ligament problem. If there is some ligament tear in cruciate ligaments or menisci then it can be diagnosed by a MRI

In you hip as there is no other problem except some marrow edema you will heal with rest. Take all precautionary measures and you can take intermittent anti inflammatory drugs to relieve you pain.

Follow up near you orthopedic surgeon.

Take care!
