popping and pain

by shortiie02, Aug 22, 2007 02:15PM
i'm only 14 years old and i'm atheltic, i participate in soccer and cross country at the moment, but i also run track and play softball and basketball. i never had a knee problem before, but now whenever i move my leg, it makes a popping noise. it is also very, very painful to walk up and down steps and to bend down. it is fine to walk on, but it gets unbearably sore to sit still for more than two minutes and i have to set it out straight. when i set it out straight, it makes that popping noise. i went to my family doctor and he said its possible that i have torn a ligament. the only thing is, i don't recall hitting, or falling on my knee. it just started to hurt when i woke up one morning. i have to go see an orthopedic next week, and i was looking stuff up and it i only found that the way to repair a ligament is surgery. i really would not like surgery because i would be on crutches for 4-6 months and there goes basically a whole year of sport seasons for me. would you happen to know any alternative ways of repairing a ligament?

thanks :]

Hello dear,
The pooping knee may be due to Discoid meniscus which is an abnormally shaped meniscus within the knee joint.
The discoid meniscus can cause problems, usually a popping sensation with pain over the outside part of the knee joint.
If there is a popping sensation, then conservative treatment consisting of exercises and stretching can be performed. If these treatments do not relieve the symptoms, arthroscopic surgery on the discoid meniscus would be helpful.
Best.
Take care

Hi dear,

Popping and painful knee could be due to any kind of injury either to the ligament or to the meniscus. Meniscus is usually injured by sudden, jerky, twisty movments. This is more common among sport spersons. It is possible that some injury may have gone unnoticed, like some kind of casual sprains to which we dont pay much heed.

So I think it is better to get yourself evaluated at the earliest and undergo the necessary treatment. I have faced this myself because of repeated injuries while playing badminton and dancing.

So good luck to you !!!!
