Thank you for taking thetime to reply to my question, I do appreciate it.  My problem is how do I know when the ligaments are completely healed plus for how long should I wear an ankle support.  I know my doctor said I was to be careful during my holiday in South Africa which starts on 9th Feb.

Hello!

Always wear some ankle support and do not do any major weight bearing till the healing of ligaments is complete.

You can continue applying ice and also take intermittent ibuprofen.

Take care!

Thank you for replying to my question.  My ankle swelling has mostly gone down but I still have some pain which I suppose will go on for a little while yet whilst the ligaments heal themselves. I have been told 6-8 weeks.

Hi, Ankle sprains are the most common of all orthopedic injuries. The anterior talofibular ligament, calcaneofibular ligament, the deltoid ligament, and the syndesmotic ligaments are the major ligaments involved in ankle stability. The anterior talofibular ligament is the most commonly injured ligament. Rest, ice, compression, and elevation
(RICE regimen) is the standard treatment for a few days following a sprain. The use of a walking cast or fracture boot with the foot in slight dorsiflexion often allows patients to assume their normal activities much faster than without support.
