swollen thumb

My grandaughter is a very active 8 year old. She injured her thumb during a soccer match in March. Her whole thumb is still swollen and painful if she gets it hit or bumped., and now it is May.  Xray and MRI showed no breaks but some redness. The doctor said in kids this takes awhile to heal. He never put a splint or any thing on it. As I said she is very active and athletic. She plays soccer, ice skates golfs and bowls at times. and is always on her trampoline.I don't think this can heal as she keeps getting it re-ingured. I think the tendons are hurt and need time to heal. Should we be looking at a splint of somekind to keep it protected. She has been seen by her pediatrician several times and a radiologist who read the prints. What would you suggest or am I being  an overly anxious Grandmother.

She has had an Xray and a MRI that were read by a radiologist. They say it is ingury to her tendons and they take a long time to heel. Thanks for you comment,

see a orthopedic hand doctor but research the doctors in your area first. find one that has x-ray equipment in there office, this will save time.   if the x-ray is negative the doctor may want to have a MRI taken.  i wouldn't waste your time and money going to a pediatrician unless required by insurance to get a referral.  good luck  i'll be checking this post to see what the out come is   Phill

MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL
Hello!

I can understand your concern as her loving grandmother. She has no fractures, but some soft tissue injuries involving tendons of her thumb.

In children as they play around they can re-injure, counsel her to be careful with her thumb, with no fractures and complications like dislocations she will heal in 2-3 months with any soft tissue issues.

Take a second opinion on the splint, for me it is not necessary.

Take care!
