terrible foot pain, swelling, redness, feverish and shiny

Today is Monday and it's March. Last Wednesday I awoke to a swollen left foot. It was red and feverish and extremely painful. I couldn't lay it down in any fashion without it throbbing. It throbbed whether or not it was hanging off the bed or higher than my heart.  It really hurt the most along the outer side and every toe. Later, it was mostly my heel. I couldn't  walk without help. I searched for a bug bite but there was none. It really feels like it's broken, but how could that happen in bed? I had a broken foot as a child and it felt this same way.  You might need to know that I am diabetic. I take medicine for it, not insulin.
Like I said, this is March. The reason I tell you this is because just about a year ago at about this same time, this exact same thing happened to me while I was visiting at my daughter's house. Woke up, RIGHT foot was swollen, red, painful, no bugbite, and  for 4 days I had to have help walking. Then, it was GONE! It left as quickly as it came. Until that day, I could not walk.. then there was nothing. Nothing!  Because it isn't the same foot as before, I really don't think this is a foot problem, I think it's from something else, but I just had a check up and everything was good. My A1C was 6.1 which is really good. This time, it's been nearly a week and it's still nearly as bad, but I am able to limp about. And I could get a shoe on it today.
I'm not one for taking pain pills. I've had many operations and never took one. Last bad foot time, I took 1. This time I've been taking them every day! If I don't take 1 before bed, I cannot stand to have the top sheet touch it, can't find any position that doesn't just kill it. When it wears off, the pain wakes me up.
The 1st time, I went to the doctor and he didn't know what it was, but ex rayed it since it felt broken but it wasn't. he finally decided that I might have broken a blood vessel and said it will turn black in a couple of days and he gave me the prescription for the pain pills. It never turned colors, and in fact, THE VERY NEXT MORNING it was fine. swelling and redness gone. No pain. nothing.
Every night I go to bed hoping that I will awaken and have it be gone again, but so far, nada.
Does anyone have any idea what this might be? I have no allergies to pollen or anything spring causing. Is it just a coincidence that it was just about this same time of year?
