torn calf muscle

Hi,  Nine days ago I jumped over a curb while wearing a pair of shoes with 2 inch heels. When I landed I felt like I had been hit by a rock on my calf, then I had terrible pain in my calf. The next morning I went to work(which is a on my feet job) I was limping but had no visible marks on my calf. Did the same the next day and that night my calf was very bruised and visibly swollen. I took 5 days off work with icing it 4 times a day and kept it elevated. I returned to work after eight days and was on my feet for 7 hrs and my calf swelled up by 2 more inches and my arch of my foot was also black and blue. If keep limping on it the pain is not too bad, but if I rest it for a while the calf muscle tightens up so much it makes me nauseous. The GP looked at it and said it was sprained. Does this sound normal? Also how long should the pain, weakness and bruising keep up? I have been taking advil for the pain. The pain is right down the center back of my calf. Thanks for any help, Snowgirl1257

Hello!

The torn calf muscle may spasm, and contract forcefully. All your symptoms point towards calf muscle strain. The symptoms in your arch of the foot are due to pooling of the blood from internal bleeding.

Grade 1 Calf Strain: The muscle is stretched causing some small micro tears in the muscle fibers. Full recovery takes approximately two weeks.
Grade 2 Calf Strain: There is partial tearing of muscle fibers. Full recovery takes approximately 5-8 weeks.
Grade 3 Calf Strain: This is the most severe calf strain with a complete tearing or rupture of muscle fibers in the lower leg. Full recovery can take 3-4 months and, in some instances, surgery may be needed.
I would suggest you to follow up near an orthopedician for proper grading and treatment.
For minor injuries you would need non steroidal anti inflammatory drugs and R.I.C.E. (rest, ice, compression, elevation).

Take care!
