ultrasound in pregnancy

by neca, Dec 14, 2008 10:24AM
Hello,

I am 35 weeks pregnant and because of some risks in pregnancy I had to undergo ultrasound examinations more frequently than usual. Now I am worried because I heard some opinions about ultrasound in pregnancy can be harmful. I would like to ask weather this is true or false and can these frequent ultrasound examinations harm my baby in any way.

thank you very much

Hi Montenegro,
Thanks for your question. I am glad to inform that as a standard diagnostic procedure there are no known harmful effects of an ultrasound either to the baby or to you. What you must have heard about were x-rays which are harmful to the baby in the first few months of pregnancy. So do not fret you and your baby is doing just fine.
Please make sure however you do continue to get your routine ultrasounds done and continue to follow up with your obstetrician.
Regards,
Dr Sylvester
