vertibrae fracture

I have fractures on c-1 & c-2 vertibraes.  Is this serious and is surgery usually needed.  I fell and hit the back of my head on the tennis court cement very hard.  No pain or soreness.  I'm been advised to see a nuero surgeon.  My age is 77

This discussion is related to Benign spinal hemotomas.

Hi Jerry,
Usually in case of vertebral fracture, surgical repair is not warranted all the times. The spinal cord runs within the spine and when there is compression of the cord surgery is a must. There are other indications of surgery too. Like when there are neurological signs or significant pain.
However the trauma you have sustained appears to be trivial but due to your age the bones may be weaker than usual due to osteoporosis. This may have resulted in the fracture that you describe. Healing process may be delayed in older people. Therefore it is important to assess the amount of damage to the vertebrae. Also surgery may be needed to stabilize the injured spine and prevent further damage.
There fore it is mandatory that you see a Neurosurgeon. If you have any further queries do get in touch with me.
Regards,
Dr Sylvester
