worried about pins or screws in tib break

I broke my tib and fib in January 2016 but didn't have  an operation as the surgeon thought it would heal itself but now 6 month on I am told they want to put a screw in as the tib bone is on 90% healed, I keep hearing bad things about having pins and screws put in and unsure if this make it worse, I am right to be worried ???
