would like information regarding ankle fusion

Can anyone give me information regarding their experience with an ankle fusion.  I shattered my ankle and broke my leg 28 yrs ago and after having 7 operations, ankle fusion seems to be the agreement with 3 doctors.  I would like someone to tell me about their experience, (pain,recovery time,and if it really helped with the pain that they had before the surgery.)

About 6months ago I had a ankle fusion. About 2 weeks ago when on my feet for a few minutes it feels like I am stepping on the head of a nail.  It must me a piece of hardware which was used to hold my fused ankle.  So I still have pain and something is not correct in my foot.
Ankle replacement was not a option for me since I had much atrophy in this ankle.
I opted for the fusion to resolve my pain problem.
