Ileostomy and Diamox?

Ileostomy and Diamox?

I have had an ileostomy for many years.  I'm traveling to high altitudes in the fall for an active vacation with lots of hiking and walking.  I often deal with dehydration (from both somewhat high ileo output and heavy sweating during exercise...) and I'm able to correct fluid loss/ electrolyte imbalance with the use of oral rehydration fluid (Ceralyte products) and lots of fluid intake.  I'm wondering whether the use of Diamox for altitude acclimitization would be a bad idea or not?  I've understood that it is not a strong diuretic, but should I stay clear of diuretics all together?  I want to enjoy the trip but not put myself at risk for an intestinal blockage of kidney stone.

Thank you,
yaya

u have probably gone on ur trip by now and did fine..u r right..biggest cause of ileostomy re-addmission is due to dehydration...unless ur dr rx-d///ur surgeon/I wouldbe a bit hesitant to take anything that would cause even more fluid loss..the bowel absorbs fluid as it travels thru the gi tract...when a person without an ostomy has a bm it is most aften formed as the fluid has been taken back to the body via the intestines...an ileostomy is in the small bowel so lots of fluid is lost into the pouch...there r foods u can eat to help...if ur ostomy is not too far up in the small intestine then even immodium can help..people with very high ileosotmies will just empty the pill into the bag before it is digested...hope ur trip went well
