ileostomy reversal

by sistercare7, Oct 01, 2009 04:17PM
My brother had an ileostomy reversal around the 19th of August this uear 09. Has lost a massive amount of weight and been told he has to have another operation next week to stretch his back passage.
Is this a common procedure after a reversal? How long does it take for people to recover from the reversal and will my brother ever be able to eat normally and put weight on again. He is a third of his normal size now.

Ask,ask more questions, more info,w/all Drs.on your brother's case.I had an illiostomy nov-09,supposed to be reversed in 3-4 mo,but its been over a year, due to not gaining weight, and my output is too liquid most of the time.I've been in/out of hospital 5 times since surgery, mostly dehydration. I found that Drs usually don't explain much, and I have very good ones w/great reputations. They answer as best they can..each case is different, etc. I take meds to slow down the output, but just haven't been stable lonf enough for the reversal, almost had it done, then slipped backwards. Sorry to make this sound more about me,but it seems from what I've heard, which i a lot!..that there are so many variables. I'm nervous about the reversal, too.Did your brother feel ready to have it done? What made his Drs think he was ready? Personally,I would not agree to have that surgery until I understand it,the whys, all the things you're wondering about.Your brother is blessed to have you,bet you feel the same way about him! Any sugestions and sharing of your brother's illiostomy experience is most appreciated. Thanks, and I wish ya'll the best. Ask away & research!!  illiemae
