Please advise me -I need your help.

Hello,

I am not sure if any of you remember me but my Mom was diagnose in April 2009 with ovarian cancer-, she has her ovaries removed and has 12 cycles of carbo/taxel - followed by 6 cycles of caylex (not sure I spelt that correctly).

After which her CA125 level as stable and there were no masses so she was on a 4 month break from chemo. She had a CT scan done in Aug 2010 and that showed she has an enlarged lymph node in her chest so before it turns into cancer they started here back on chemo  -this time they started her on carbo - she one 1 treatment of this in Aug and when she went for her second treatment she had an allergic reaction so they did not give her it - they decided to start her back on Caylex - she had this treatment on Oct  8,2010 after which she started to get a high fever - she went to the hospital and they could not find why she was getting this fever they assumed she had a viral infection. They kept her in hospital in for 8 days she was discharged on Nov 2,2010.

While in the hospital they did a CT Scan and nothing was showed up except that that the fluid in the might be coming back - so to prevent any uncomfortable feeling I asked for them to drain the fluid - which they did on Nov 4th,2010. It was not much she only had a little bit. however what has gotten me so flustered is that the head nurse come over to my mom and I and asked if my mom wants to do chemo and my mom said  that she was too weak to do it so can we put it off for next week- and then she proceeded to say  " We all have to died at some point and we know that cancer will take my mom but they feel that since is fluid is back it needs that the cancer is active and that the chemo treatment is not working - it will only keep the cancer at bay and the cancer can sometimes out smart the treatment.  She then asked my mom if she feels the chemo is working because they don't think it is due to the fact that the fluid is coming back - they said that my mom should think about whether she wants to spend  the time with all the side effects of the chemo or would she rather spend the time with her family and not have the side effects. And also that research shows that after have both chemo treatments - carbo/taxel and caylex that most patients died.

As you can imagine we were floored by this and we asked her to set up a meeting with the doctor for next week. I want my mom to live I can not loose her now .. please help me to what are the right questions to ask.

Nicola.

I feel your pain.  My mom had ovca too, many years ago.  The way the nurse spoke to your mom was insensitive.  It is true that often chemo does not cure, but holds the cancer at bay.  This is fine by me.  The longer it is kept stable, the longer I have with my family.  I hope the doctor  meeting goes well.  I wish the best for your mom and your family.  Marie
