6.2 cm cyst found - have had ongoing hormonal problems for past several years

Hello,

I am a thirty one year old female with no children as of yet. For the past few years I have had unexplained weight gain, pain in the ovarian area, excess hair growth, night sweats, urinary frequency (very bad), bloating, acne, feeling very sick and fatigued.

Well, recently I went to the gyno after finding out on ultrasound that I had a 6.2 cm ovarian cell tumor or endometrioma posterior to the uterus and that an MRI was indicated. She ordered the MRI and it came back saying that their was a 6.2 cm cyst posterior to the uterus that may represent a broad liagament cyst or _____duct cyst (they actually left the word before duct blank!). It also said that it should also be considered that this cyst may have originated from both my ovaries. YET, it says both of my ovaries are normal.

Now a few years ago, I was told I had a cyst on each ovary one being 1.8 cm and another 2.8 cm and I was told they were nothing and I didn't have to follow up at all.

Now, I am wondering if the cyst now is the one(s) from the previoius years?

My CA-125 was 7 and my CA 19-9 was 6 which is good. And the MRI says it doesn't look suspicious for malignancy.

I just know I have been going from doctor to doctor for the past few years with all my sudden endocrine problems and haven't received any answers, some said possible cushings others said pcos, yet it would be unusual at my age that I would have pcos all of a sudden. I also am getting frontal scalp balding, in addition to excess hair, etc.

Could this cyst causing the problems or be cancerous?

Hi Marie,
It sounds to me like you should have this cyst surgically removed. Most cysts are not cancer but a cyst over 4-5 cm does star to cause pain, and bloating. It can cause urinary symptoms just from pressure secondary to its size.

Some cysts produce estrogen or the male hormone, testosterone. That can be the cause of weight change, nausea, hair growth, acne. There are blood test to check for that as well ( estrogen levels, testosterone levels)
You should ask your doctor about surgery.

My daughter had psoc and had bald patches,excessive weight gain,absent periods and excessive hair growth. She also had a cyst 14cm on right ovary,whcich was removed. She was 19(i dont know if age has anything to do with it,as after all its all hormone related)but they put her on some tablet(can not remember the name,sorry)which was also for diabetes. She did not take them for long but has had no re-accurance of symptoms except for irregular periods. Sorry if this is not much help but just wanted you to know.DAWN

Dalip, thank your for sharing your daughter's story. It is helpful to know. That was quite a large cyst she had. Are you saying that once she had the large cyst removed all her pcos symptoms disappeared (except her irregular periods)? Did they have to do the surgery laprascopi or more extensively (laparatomy)? Hope you don't mind the questions, just that their are similarities. Hope she is doing well and thanks again for sharing.

Glad you found it useful. They removed the cyst by cutting along the bikini line(same as hystectomy)and not all her pcos dissapeared. She is still overweight but has had no hair loss(she had quite large bald patches,but luckily she had long hair and as they were at the back she managed to hide them)still a little bit more hairy but not excessive now. She is 23 now(so that was about 4 years ago)and has had no more cysts but still gets the occasional ovary pain on that side now and again. She still has both her overies.

I have a 10cm cyst on my left ovary and am seeing my gyno this friday with a view to removing cyst and both ovariers.Keep your fingers crossed and i will do the same for you.
