8.75X6.15CM cyst in my right ovary

by chrysler, Mar 06, 2005 12:00AM
I'm 23yrs old and was diagnosed two weeks ago of this hemorragic cyst in my right ovary. It is 8.75 x 6.15 cm big and i am worried about it. I had this MRI scan because I was bleeding in between my periods... I was about to wait for two more months before I will have it removed because I cannot take a leave from work but it worried me that my tummy is getting bigger.... i wonder why, and it seems like i am pregnant but all the medical test i had says it is negative. Is it usual that your tummy gets bigger if you have a cyst in the ovary?

Oh, yes !  One of the first symptoms of my cyst (an endometrioma) was that I needed one size larger jeans, even thought I had not gained a serious amount of weight.  Later I learned that I needed the larger jeans because of the size of my cyst.  Now that it has been removed, I think that I need a 'tummy tuck.'

Thanks MickeyVicki, I haven't gained weight also but I am now one size bigger than what I usually wear. I'm feeling so depressed now coz I cannot take a leave from work to have it operated (coz I will be promoted next month) so now I have to choose between work and my health. I wonder if it can wait for two more months... but my gyne insist that this is an urgent matter coz the cyst is twisting my ovary...

HELLO!

I was in a similar situation one week ago, just that the cyst I had was still cold and there were no symptoms of any torsion in the ovary.
What does the MRI report say? going by your description, it appears to me that the cyst could be a dermoid which has undergone a small torsion due to it weight. I was diagnosed with a left ovarian dermoid measuring 7 cm in dia on a routine scan. Although, there were no symptoms like pain, bleeding between periods etc, I did have a fat tummy. A series of ultrasound scans and MRI confirmed that the cyst could be a dermoid.

Your gyne is right. It needs to be removed before it can cause more damage to the reporoductive system, the ovary and the tube.
My cyst was removed through operative laparoscopy. This is a painless, scarless procedure that will require hospitalization of not more than a day. I applied leave on a friday and was back to office on the following Monday!!! (yes, there will be some tiredness and sligh body ache, but its definitely manageable)

I was in a similiar situation like yours in the work place. But I had to take a call! Please prioritze, health is always first. And if your case is similar to mine, then leave should not be an issue at all!

All the very best!

That was nice to hear, Thank you Devin... the problem with me is I want to have the laparoscopy in the U.S. coz right now I am in U.A.E. I don't trust the doctors here. I already consulted 3 doctors and like what you said they were saying it might be a dermoid cyst... they wouldn't know if its cancer or what yet until they had it removed and examined in the lab-- all the report says its a mass with cystic components... Maybe I have to leave my job asap coz it has been paining me for two weeks now.

I will readily admit that there are places in which I would not want to submit to a procedure as simple as a flu shot, but in the U.A.E. you should receive excellent medical care.  I do understand if you wish to be with family and friends during your recovery, however.

But they are right; if you have torsion then the situation is more serious and you do need surgery, soon.  Does your employer not provide time for medical emergencies?  I ask because that is what your situation essentially is.  Your medical expenses will be cheaper and your recovery time will be shorter if the cyst is removed now, rather than waiting for a possibly  worse situation if  serious complications result from the torsion.

The chances of the cyst being malignant are very rare. Dermoids, termed as cystic teratoma in medical terminology, are 99.99% benign. But the exact nature can be determined only after sending the sample to biopsy, i.e. after removing it.
I have a couple of friends in the U.A.E. I have heard medical treatment is affordable and reliable too.

Please dont have any apprehensions. Its better to get rid of it rather than bearing the pain.
Also, please note that if the procedure being adopted is laparoscopy, then you should not be worrying at all.
It is very safe, unlike an open surgery, and can be done in any good hospital under gyne supervision.
Also, the procedure is short and simple. will hardly take 20 min. You should be fine in a day or two!

Please do not delay!

I've been to another gynecologist again today and I took all the test again, and she told me after two weeks I'll have to see her again for her opinion, and then I have to be scheduled for laparascopy. I don't know why they keep on referring me to other doctors when the other who referred me to her told me that it is urgent that I will be operated coz the cyst is twisting my ovary and causing me so  much pain... that is what I hate here, It feels like they don't really know my case... I have already been to 4 hospitals here, 4 gyne but no one wants to do the laparascopy for me urgently when I am already in so much pain.
