8.9 cm complex mass on ovary

by RN-BSN, Oct 25, 2003 12:00AM
I'm 41, have 5 m infant and felt baseball size mass in pelvic cavity in July.  Exp some pelvic discmft assoc with it.  Within 6 wks  mid Aug,this seemed to enlarge to grapefruit size.  At my postpartum visit mid Sept, OB ordered pelvic US w/TV.  Got results yesterday = "8.9 cm mass on R ovary w/ cystic & solid components, more cystic collection adjacent to mass."

OB is a bit miffed.  Had pelvic US (noTV)& CA-125 around 1/02 =  both nml. NO hx of ovarian CA - mother is 75, no hx known for mat. grndmthr.

Had US at beg. of preg in Oct 2002 to confirm preg.  Also had US with amnio for this preg in Dec or Jan 2003- both were routine and no abnormalities found.

How much of the ovaries would be seen in these two U/S??? What does the "complex" mean?

OB says stastically the chance of it being malgnt is low but nevertheless there's some possibility.  His plan= bld tests next week, meet in two weeks to discuss further.  I know Ca -125 is not definitive, what other bld test might he order?  Is there anymore specific US I could take to gather more info or is a laposcopy next?  Are there really bld tests that can RO CA or should I insist on a lap now?

He thinks it probably is a comb of a Corpus Lutial cyst and ??  Any ideas?  Should I be as frightened as I am feeling.  Seems very rapid onset, this is why he doens't feel it's CA.  He said for a CA to get that size would take decades.

Should I be pushing for rapic dx, ie STAT labs, skip labs for a lap or? Is several weeks to month going to matter?  Have 3 kids 9, 4 and 5 mo I'd like to see grow up.
Thanks, RN BSN
