9mm cyst

Hi everyone,

A few days ago i was diagnosed with a 9mm ovarian cyst on a visit to the ER. i was told to use a heating pad for about 1-3 days and if the pain persisted, to see a doctor. I don't have insurance and so i know it will be a very expensive visit which i cannot afford at the moment. My question is, how big should an ovarian cyst be to be considered very dangerous? I've tried the heating pad and i felt a sharp pain a few seconds after placing it on my abdomen and i intend to do that hoping it would either shrink it or make it rupture. I also do intend to see a doctor as soon as i possibly can. most of the information i've found about ovarian cysts do not really tell me how serious mine is. Please let me know if you have any knowledge about this. I'm 24 by the way. Thanks a lot.

Thanks Marianne...it's a 9mm cyst....the pain isn't excruciating but it is when i get my period. One inquiry though...does a heating pad have the ability to shrink it or make it rupture? or is it just BC pills that can do it? any info will be very much appreciated. thanks.

Did you mean 9 centimeters, or 9 millimeters? 9mm is very, very small (can cause pain, don't get me wrong), but no danger from twisting, etc since it is so small. 9cm is larger and has a danger of twisting because of the size.
Most dr's do a watch-and-wait while putting you on oral BC's, since a ordinary hemmhoragic cyst will resolve with BC's. A dermoid or endometrioma will not, and that's how they can determine if it's a simple cyst or something a bit more involved.

My sister was having a lot of pain with, what we thought was a kidney infrction. She, too, had no insurance. I took her to the ER anyway. They diagnosed her with a UTI and ovarian cyst. They told her the same as you. And, she couldn't afford the follow up doctor appointment and her husband was "too proud" to accept any medical assistance. She had been going to Planned Parenthood every six months for BCP. Luckily for her, the cyst was reabsorbed by her body, as most cysts do in time. Could be the BCP helped too. I'm not sure what the Planned Parenthood could have done for her if the cyst had gotten worse. But, it's worth a try for you. Find a Planned Parenthood, or something similar, near your home, and check it out. I have a long, long history of cysts, some surgically removed and some reabsorbed with the help of BCP. They're not worth leaving untreated. Infertility could happen.
