Are Soy products a risk to us?

Just wondering what everyone thinks of this article found in a newspaper today. Any comments?

not so....fermented soy shows it can assist in halting ovarian cancer.  As far as the estrogen factor, fermented soy (if anything) stops the bad hormones and allows the good hormones.

Do a google search on it and you will see how it has helped one woman in a study.  Also phenoxodil which is being developed (phase 3) is based off the isoflavone in soy to help resistant ovca cells

nature's way brand has 'estrosoy' which contains fermented soy (better than drinking it!).  Also look into DIM which has also been shown to kill ovca cells (they also have one from nature's way that contains bioresponse-DIM)

Its hard to say for sure whether or not a particular cancer, outside of breast cancer, is "estrogen positive" or not... But given the uncertainity... err on the side of cation. Avoid soy products. Soy isoflavones are actually indicated as a natural alternative to HRT... which should give you some idea of their estrogen mimicing qualities. My mother, fallopian tube/endometrial cancer, was told to avoid them as well.

From what I know, ovarian cancer tends not to be estrogen driven although there are a few that appear to be. One type is the kind I have - MPSC. I have been told to avoid soy products, and am no longer taking HRT. Best to talk to your Dr and see what they have to say.

I too have been told to avoid soy products because soy mimics estrogen.  I was diagnosised early stage, 1A, in 2000....have had 2 surgeries and they believe that I have developed ORS now...so in my case, they believe that estrogen produces cysts, and there is a history of OvCa...so why risk the use of soy.

This article is linking soy intake to breast and prostate cancer, because they are hormone-dependent cancers.  Does ovarian cancer fall under "hormone-dependent" as well?  It seems that most other research says that soy is preventative against cancer, so I have been telling my mom to eat more soy.  But she is going through chemo for ovarian 2c cancer - now that I've read this article, I'm wondering if more soy truly does promote the cancer/counteract the chemo?!  Or maybe this data is only pertinent to breast/prostate anyway?  Very confused...

It's an interesting article.  I would think that excessive ingestion of any particular food would have its dangers.   Certainly those people whose cancers are hormone receptive should be cautious.  Soy products are in many foodstuffs.  The soy used is different from the traditional in that it's not fermented for longer.  It is the long, fermented soy that is good for you.  All I can say is check your food labels when next shopping because I think you will be surprised at the soy or soya based content.

All the very best.
