Exiqon Announces Positive Clinical Data From EORTC Clinical Trial Showing Oncotech EDR Assay Predicts Resistance to Platinum-Based Therapy in Ovarian Cancer

Last update: 9:11 a.m. EDT Oct. 27, 2008
VEDBAEK, Denmark, October 27, 2008 /PRNewswire-FirstCall via COMTEX/ -- The European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC) has undertaken a multi-institutional prospective randomized clinical trial on 719 late stage epithelial ovarian cancer patients (named 55971). Results were announced today at the 2008 International Gynecologic Cancer Society (IGCS) biennial meeting in Bangkok, Thailand. In this study, Oncotech EDR Assays were performed on biopsies obtained from 246 patients. Results clearly demonstrate that resistance to carboplatin, as identified by the Oncotech EDR Assay, was a significant independent predictor for response to first-line treatment in advanced ovarian cancer patients.
The clinical trial results demonstrate that the use of the Oncotech EDR Assay predictive test can predict resistance to platinum-based chemotherapy before therapy is initiated. These results are important to ovarian cancer treating physicians since ovarian cancer is known to show resistance to platinum-based agents. Currently, the standard first-line treatment regimen for late stage ovarian cancer contains platinum-based chemotherapy

FYI...even if you are platinum resistant, researchers have found ways around this:

- Weekly Cisplatin or Carboplatnim have shown to be effective and show response
- Phenoxodiol (a modified version of the soy isovlavone Genestein) is in Phase III trials specifically to overcome platinum resistance.  This is the same way Genestein already works, they just tweaked it a little to be more targeted (and probablly more expensive)

Essentially, you can still use platinum based agents even if you are resistant, but it varies with everyone and it matters what schedule and drug(s) you are on.

I was considered resistant because I recurred within 6 mths of my 1st line treatment.  Two years later I am on a Doxil/Carbo combo and I hope it works.  It would be nice if we knew before hand if something would work or not.
Thanks to you two for keeping us up to date on this stuff.

Thank for the info.  My mom is resistant and is currently on avastin/cytoxan/methotrexate.  She initially had taxol/cisplantin, then had her first recurrance in 6-7 months.  She then was on carbo/gemzar which didn't stop the disease spreading.  It would of been great to know she was resistant before going through that IP chemo with it being so rough.
