Bleeding after post-op intercourse?

Several weeks ago I had a laporatomy to remove a very large fibroid.  Went back to work at 4 weeks with dr approval.  At my post-op visit about 6 weeks after surgery, he said I could do everything again including lifting, bending, and intercourse.

(Sorry if this is TMI, but I'm worried!)  Well, this weekend we began intercourse, nothing hurt, but we stopped when I felt wetness.  It was blood - I'd say a lot of it.  My first post-op period had ended about four days before, so I'm not sure if the bleeding was related to that?  I'm still bleeding - heavier than spotting but not as heavy as a regular period.  Is this normal?  Has anyone else experienced this?  I'm calling the gyn/onc to ask on Monday, but in the mean time I'm worrying.  Help!

The nurse says its fairly common to have bleeding the first time after surgery.  She said that it should stop on its own (its been lessening).  She said only be worried if it continues for more than a week, or if it stops but begins again the next time we have intercourse.  Hope this helps anyone else who was worrying like me!

Hi,

I had a lap procedure in August, 2000 and then had a total hysterectomy in Sept., 2000. In my case, my cervix was removed during the hysterectomy, so I am not sure if my information will be helpful. But, in late January, early February, when DH and I got brave enough, we "celebrated" a Minnesota Vikings win (no sex today, they lost) and sure enough, I had bleeding afterwards. I think you are very smart to call the doctor. Just to be safe. I called mine the next day and was told not to worry. I cannot remember the exact reason, but it had something to do with the healing.

Fast-forward four years later, and I had one episode of bleeding (and I was not doing ANYTHING sexy...just sitting at my desk at work!)...just a random occurance that truely freaked me out. Again, after a call to the doc....told not to worry and it has not happened since then.

Let us know how things go for you.

Could be that you are still recovering internally from the procedure and this is your bodies way of telling you so.

I would keep a note of how often you are changing your pads (assuming not using internals) as this will give your doc a good idea of whether or not it is unusually heavy.

Could find that your hormones are out of sync with the surgery.

Have to say after my last lap I wasn't brave enough to try sex until a few months later and even then found it uncomfortable and felt crampy afterwards.

Congrats on your recovery - gives me hope that I wont be out of action for too long.
