Blood clot from IV, anybody experience this post surgery?

Hello everyone, I hope this post finds you all doing well. As well as can be expected at least.  :)

My pathology reports were that the ovary contained a mixed papillary muconous cystadefibroma (sp?).  So I will be followed every six months and that is that.  Surgery was the treatment.  

I have a blood clot in my hand, it is a "thrombosis" (again, I can't spell these medical terms!).  I was told to put hot compresses on it and take aspirin, but it isn't going away.  Any advice?  It is right at where the tip of the IV needle ended, and all those medicines that burned like heck going in must have caused it.

I recently came out of an 8 day stay at the hospital due to what they believe to be a kidney infection. I have hard to get veins, so I usually have to have flight for life start my IV's. The first one they started was about 3 inches down from the inside of my elbow on my left arm, 3 days later it infiltrated, they started the next on my right wrist, 2 days later it slipped out and got infected, the third and last was started on my left wrist and was in until I was discharged.

I developed, what my dr has said to be, 2 blood clots in the area of the second IV site, and 1 blood clot at the first IV site.

My concern is the dr told me they would not move, however, at the first IV site, on the left arm, the clot, or "hardness" was right where the IV needle ended. It is now right in the middle of my elbow, 2 inches further up my arm than it was before. It is bruised looking, hard, and very painful. Dr told me the same thing, compresses and motrin, but should I be concerned that it is moving?

I had several blood clots in my arm following my hysterectomy.  I put warm compresses on it and took aspirin.  They finally went away after a few months.  Apparently, this is not uncommon, but my doctor assured me that blood clots in the arm do not usually embolize, and therefore nothing to worry about.  The aspirin helps to dissolve the clot, so make sure you keep taking it.

To extend the information I read ... I had foot surgery last week 4/20/2009 and normally experience trouble with IVs.  Luckily only three pokes this time with no use of numbing before.  The IV was rather painful than before and delayed, but worked.  After surgery I was aware of a lot of pain in my wrist area and initially figured it was due to being strapped down poorly or perhaps my hand/wrist area was bumped badly during moving me to a stationary bed.  Now a week later, I do not understand why my wrist would continue to hurt the same as last week - why is my bruised wrist not healing?  After a few light discussions with a doctor by phone she suspected a blood clot.  My cousin died last week from an unsuspected blood clot - age 45.  Something to always keep in mind.  So, after an ultrasound it was confirmed that I do have a blood clot and can literally follow the pain from the side of my wrist all the way to the point where the IV was entered.  My vein is swollen and feels like a rope from the point of the blood clot half way to the IV area.  The IV area is not even that irritable but he area of the blood clot near my wrist bone extremely painful.   I have been told to take aspirin for five days and apply warm compresses, monitor and return to the doctor in five days if the pain/problem persist.  Good luck to others in this situation.  I gathered from the tech who did my ultrasound that I might have this trouble with the blood clot for some time.  She said she had this happen after giving birth and it lasted over a month.  ***@**** ~ Amy

Hello Ms. SimplyStar!  How are you?  I just wanted to think you for your quick response to my "Posted Comment".  And I wanted to also let you know and anyone else that might be reading this!  I called the doctor that was on call last night; of course he wasn't too happy about my calling him and I probably woke him!  (But I had too know or I wasn't going to rest!) I asked him about the "thing" I have on my wrist and let him know that it's sore.  Its not very big.  It just feels like a small knot just below the area of where the IV was inserted.  And do you know what he said?  "It's nothing to be worried about.  It's very common and will eventually go away and see you in 3wks"!  He didn't seem to be worried at all!!  But as I recall, the day after surgery, I wanted to spit bullets at the nursey's that insisted that I get up 1 day after surgery and walk! And what was that for?  TOO KEEP "BLOOD CLOTS" AWAY!!!  Oh! and they even took the catheder away just too make sure I was up going to the bath room!  And now that I have this stupid "Blood Clot", it's nothing too worry about!!  OMG! am I confused or what!  I guess you can detect my frustration!  But I'm gonna try to not worry about this thing and put hot compresses on it as I was told by a nurse who called me to check on me today!  I was relieved then!  She said that it was a different kind of clot and that it will go away eventually!  I'll keep you and who ever else is interested informed!

it sound like the vein  might have been punctured upon needle insertion and now that it has been so long  it could be blood leaking into the tissues.  do you have heat or pain in the area, if so  you could go get it checked out.  I would think any sore spot should be looked at to see if you have a hematoma.

I just got my staples off today!  My surgery was last friday Sept. 5.  I had a mellon size tumor growing on my left ovary and over fibroid issues going on with my uterus so it had to go too!  Historectomy at age 43yrs of age!!!!!  But they did leave one ovary!!  My recovery was a success, however, I have this thing in my left hand and it's in the same area where the IV was!  That area has been sore for quite some time since I've left the hospital and I'd just figured it will go away eventually. So I ignored it!  But now I'm concered because thee sore spot which was just a swelling spot has moved!  Not far from the IV site but it certainly isn't in the same area of insertion!  Is this a Blood Clot from the IV and is it normal?  Should I panic and go to the ER?  What should I do and how will I know it's a Clot?

Thank you all, I am bummed about this, because it is painful and isn't going away.  I am going to call again and see when they would expect these hot compresses (I'm using a heating pad, no fun in the dead heat here) and taking aspirin.  I'll ask about your suggestions too.
Somehow it helps to know I'm not the only one, although I hate that you all had to go through this.

HI! I had this following a hospitalization for my ulcerative colitis. I developed 4 blood clots as a result of IV's and the meds....As u were told, i used hot comprases, and gave it time. Mine were very painful. It took about 6-8 mo. before they were gone and actually it has caused valves in my hand so i can not have an IV put in that hand anymore.

You should see a hematologist to be checked for any other clots, i had u/s to check for DVT  in both legs and arms and neck. Please follow up w/ ur doctor and get an u/s. They may also want to run clotting panel on you to make sure that u don't have a clotting disorder. As it turns out, i do...

I had one in my hand from them missing a vein, finding it, and injecting stuff into it. (I had a newer nurse doing it while being watched by a more experienced nurse). I had a huge painful swollen & bruised area. They told me to do the warm compresses as well, but I also used some arnica (I had it in horse-treatment form, but I know you can get it at most health food stores. Arnica reduces bruising and gets the trapped blood away.
I gave up on the compresses, and just soaked the whole hand in warm water... the compresses never stayed warm enough long enough.

Hi there, I'd ovary removed with mass and I'd a blood clot in the left calf of my leg.  It was diagnosed as thrombosis.  It was swollen, red and painful.  My gynocologist/oncologist prescribed daily injections of Fragmin 10000 units a day. It went away a few days after administering the injections.

I am glad that the surgery went well and you are on the RS.  As for the clot, the only thing I had was a vein collapse at an iv site.  Wasn't pretty and the bruise was horrible.  Just keep doing what your dr. tells you, however if you feel it isn't getting better, call the dr or go to the ER.  Try to take it easy!
