Borderline ovarian cancer---hysterectomy or not

by chicken3, Feb 13, 2007 12:00AM
Hi
I use to be oncolgy/hematology RN for 17 years (I quite after having children).  I underwent IVF ICIS at the age 42 when my DH developed a low sperm count (our first son was natural).  I did 2 cycles and both time developed OHSS the second time was severe that I developed ascites and pleural effustion---I was pregnant with twins, my last trimester a mass developed on my left (most productive ovary).  I had it removed last summer and I was diagnosised with endometrioid focal borderline 1 cm noninvasive ovarian cancer.

question is the gyn/onc want to do hysterectomy.  I am not sure I am ready for surgical menopause. I am only 6 years married with 4 year old and 21 month old twins.  I don't feel 44 years old and am afraid of what surgical menopause may do more then what this borderline will or will not do.  I feel that if I was a man they would allow me to keep my testical but because I am female that is not allowed.  I need some strong pros and cons for me to decide.  Believe I am scared---as they say I know too much and not enough.  GYN/ONC was not any area I did alot in.

Dear Heidi,

You have time to wait until you feel ready. In general I would recommend a CA 125 every three months and a pelvic ultrasound to check your uterus and other ovary once a year. Borderline tumors are usually slow growing.

best wishes to you.
