CA-125 Test

CA-125 Test

An ultrasound found a mass on my rt. ovary the size of a grapefruit.  I had breast cancer at 39 with radiation treaments and again at 51 with chemo and radiation.  Lumpectomies were done on both breasts.  My gyn. wants to start with the CA-125 before doing a CT because I don't have insurance.  Finally my question......how conclusive will the CA-125 be.  If the tumor markers are negative can I safely assume I don't have ovarian cancer?  Thank you

Hi,
I don't have any letters behind my name yet, so I'm not responding from a professional standpoint, but I do know that a CA125 marks only certain kinds of tumor antigens.  This is, I am fairly certain, not a foolproof way to rule out the possibility of ovarian cancer.  I have clear cell carcinoma, and have been fighting it for years, and even out of treatment, CA125 levels were not the greatest diagnostic tool.  I don't mean to sound discouraging by any means and I will send a good thought your way; just wanted to fill you in on what I know.  Best of luck to you.
