CA 125 lab test

Ladies,
This is a lab test called the CA (cancer antigen) 125 lab tests that can tell whether or not you have ovarian cancer or not. The results have to be less than 35 U /ml. Follow the following links for more information at http://www.medicinenet.com/ca_125/article.htm or from this article at WEBMD http://www.webmd.com/ovarian-cancer/cancer-antigen-125-ca-125. I hope this helps.

The consensus is that the CA-125 tumor marker for ovarian cancer is not a reliable test, especially for premenopausal women but I have recently read on the John Hopkins web site:
http://ovariancancer.jhmi.edu/menu_understanding.cfm

"CA-125 blood test (If it comes back elevated, ask your doctor to repeat this test monthly for several months. If it comes back progressively more elevated each time, even if the values are low, this is an indication that the condition could very likely be serious.)"

So this is a new "twist" on the use of CA-125 (need to use very tool we have!)

This test is very good for monitoring OVCA after you have been DX and have started Chemo.  I have "chemo buddies" whose #'s never get above 5 and they have cancer.  I have a friend whose # is around  27 and she does not have cancer.  If you are pre-menopausal the # should be less than 35, but if you are post menopausal it should be under 20.  That test is certainly not indicated on just what you have said.  I have two daughters and I started having OV cysts when I was 18.  It did not interfere with my having children so you should not worry.  Most OV cysts are not cancerous.  What is your Dr doing about the cysts?

Again, the CA125 is best used as a tumor marker in someone that has already been diagnosised with this disease.  Honestly, I don't know why your doctor is taking this blood test, I am not certain what he expects it to show....if you have endometriosis, the results will be high....I don't know if clomid will throw it off.

One of the biggest pushes for the defense of this disease is early diagnosis.  There is no test available that can detect this disease with 100 pecent accuracy other then a biospy of the mass.

OvCa is a relatively rare disease.  Please try not to worry about it unless the doctors give you a real reason to think that something could be wrong.

Let us know how it goes.

Hi, from what I have read... the CA 125 is not a good tool to use by itself since it can return false postives especially in premenopausal women. It is helpful in combination with other tests. Here is a link from Johns Hopkins where the accuracy of the CA 125 is discussed.

I was just looking for information about this myself. Hope it helps.

Hello
So why do they stress the importance of this test then? I am planning on having this lab done next week as preventative measures. I am having fertility problems to include hemorrhagic ovarian cysts that bleed even when not on my period, clomid issues, etc... My doctor says my ovarian cysts are less than 3.5cm and not to worry about cancer. Would you have the CA 125 test done based on what I have told you? I don't think my family had a history of it. I just want to be sure, that's all. Do you know if clomid causes cysts to develop? If they do, will they go away if you stop taking clomid? I had been on clomid since March for 5 months, then 3 months ago I was having a continuous nagging pain in my left lower quadrant (left ovary area). This is when my doctor discovered the cysts on my ovary and took me off clomid. Now 3 months later I am still off clomid with cysts. FYI, I am 36 yrs old and my husband and I want to have children. I am scared to death that I WON'T be able to have children with the combination of these problems plus my age. Any input will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

This test CANNOT tell whether you have Ovarian Cancer or not.  This is a blook test best used in conjunction with other tests, such as CT Scans and Transvaginal Ultrasounds.  A false positive reading is possible do to numerous different illness, even a toothache can throw the numbers off.

The only way to diagnosis Ovarian Cancer is to biopsy the mass.
