CA125 elevated?

by cathiebaloha, May 12, 2003 12:00AM
I had breast cancer 2 years ago and am following an alternative course of treatment following initial lumpectomy surgery. For routine screening I have the CA125 (among other blood work)done every 3-6 months or so. Unfortunately the one I had done 6 months ago had some problem and I never got a result. The one I just had done came back with a result of 28 which my PCP says is elevated - I think the one I had done a year ago was 17. She says normal range is 0-19 but what I've read says 0-35 is normal. Can you clarify this? I know CA125 is not recommended for screening by itself, so what would be the next step if this is elevated? I assume another test, but she did not recommend that - just referred me to my surgeon which I thought was a bit of a jump. I do have some symptoms - gas, bloating, more frequent urination or rather an inability to hold my urine (but I am 48 and have had 7 children) and some discomfort on the right side which I attributed to the gas. I have also been fighting a yeast infections for some time, more successfully recently, but still have the gas. I have not lost, but gained weight recently. My PCP does not know any of this. I just discovered tonight these are possible symptoms of ovarian cancer. I am following up with my PCP and alternative cancer doctors but wondered what your recommendation would be. Also can the timing of the test affect the results? I am premenopausal.
Thank you.
