Does anyone know why some labs say that 60 vs 35 is the magic number of being cancer free? Thanks!

You need to get an appointment with a GYN/ONC as soon as possible. No mass should ever be ignored, regardless of the results of a CA 25. Most likely, it is benign, but it should be followed up immediately.

CA-125 results vary from person-to-person as to their accuracy in detecting OVCA.  Some women's tumors do not express the protein markers needed for this test, and other conditions can cause high test results.  Therefore, you can have a normal CA-125 test, but have cancer; conversely, you can have an abnormal CA-125 test, but not have cancer.

Something is going on in your body since you've seen an elevation, but there is no way to know whether it is due to cancer or inflammation or something else entirely.  Since they've already identified a mass on an ultrasound and it appears to be growing, I would think surgery with biopsies would be your best option.  It could very well be a benign growth, but even benign tumors can do damage to other organs if they grow large enough.

Let us know what your doctor says, and don't hesitate to ask for a second opinion if you believe it is needed.

I go to Kaiser Permanente and the first time I took a CA-125 test (i requested it as part of my annual physical), it came up to 30 ~ My doctor said it was normal because it was below 35.

I had a abdom & tranvag ultrasound and they found a mass.  The doctor that spoke to me recommended surgery.  But because of the result of the CA-125 test.  I DECIDED NOT TO HAVE THE SURGERY.

Now a year later, a couple of days before my physical, I felt a bump on my abs, so I spoke to my doctor about it and she ordered the CA-125 test.

This year it is 56.

The whole year I felt fine, no pains, no sickness.

I'm suppose to meet with a doctor tomorrow to consult me about the "high result" and the
bump I felt ~ probably the mass they found last year :-(

But if 60 is normal elsewhere, should i still be worried.    I should also add that my period was "ending" at the time of my physical.

The last time I was at my doctor, he and I were reveiwing the results and he said "your lab considers under 35 to be normal"....I just wonder if maybe each lab is using a different type of testing of the blood therefore making the difference in numbers.

What does the GYN/ONC say?  Did he review the results?  Is your mom using the same lab that she has used in the past?  I try to go to the same lab and try to go around the same time of the day.

I had seen that some labs use 60 on the internet. I do not have cancer, but my mom's cancer may have returned.  I was wondering why there would be a rating difference with the test. Good luck. It sounds like you are doing great!

Each lab will tell what there normal is. But doctors love to see under 20 after treatment.  And yes 2 is possible.  My last two CA 125 were 2.  It's with all my sisters care and husbands great food, no sugar, no alcohol and no refined carbs and lots of Ginger that I atrribute it to and just dumb luck

I read one article that spoke of the difference in "normal" between pre & post-menopausal women.   35 was considered normal in post & 50 was considered normal in pre.

I know that Quest Diagnostics considers anything below 35 normal but LabCorp says anything under 20 is normal.  What lab are you using? I have not heard 60 before. My chemo nurses say that under 20 is what they shoot for if you are a good candidate to use it as a marker. The lowest I have heard of is 3 but mine is 9.9 and I have another CA125 in two weeks. Let's hope for a day when we all get 2!
