Can radiation cause a rise in CA125

by Lynn1102, Jun 20, 2009 04:33PM
I am almost 8 weeks out from abdominal radiation for lymph nodes that lit up in the PET.  My recent PET and CT showed no evidence of disease but my CA125 has skyrocketed (2200)!  Prior to radiation it was in the 500 range.  I also have severe lymphedema that is not coming under control very well with treatment.  It has spread into the abdomen.

My question is:  Could the rise in CA125 be caused by inflammation from the radiation or from the lympehedema?

I feel rather panicky about this and tend to want to go onto weekly Taxol.  My doc wants to wait another month for a CA 125 and then maybe a repeat PET and CT.  Has put me on Megestrol in the meantime.

Dear Lynn
That is very frightening isnt it?

If your scans do not show any other disease,I would wonder if the CA 125 level is related to your lymphedema.  I have not encountered a situation where radiation causes an elevation.Inflammation definately does.

megace and a repeat CA 125 in a few weeks makes sense.please let us know
best wishes
