Carbo and Taxol reaction....

by Ang80, Dec 16, 2007 03:56PM
Mum is having carboplatin and taxol for her first reoccurance.
She has her second dose of 2nd line treatment last Friday. The taxol went in fine but half way through the carboplatin she felt strange and went red. They gave her a bag of piriton (antihistamine) and carried on the rest of the carboplatin but slowed the infusion down. She has been fine since.
Does this mean she won't be able to have c and t, or is this normal?
Thanks

Not necessarily.. sometimes they have to slow the infusion down.. she will need to discuss this with her oncologist or who ever handles her chemo... I have had to have them slow down mine at times also... not a reaction after....

I was in the second treatment of my recurrence with Taxol and Carboplatin when I had a severe reaction to the Carboplatin, as well.  They stopped the infusion and gave me Benadryl. I came home and looked it up on this forum, and oddly enough, found a post by Dr. Goodman on Carboplatin reactions.  Here is the link to that post if you would like to read it:

Apparently, it is most common on the second treatment for a recurrence!  I guess this must happen a lot.  Anyway, I have not had Carboplatin since, but should the time come when my doctor wants to try it again, he said we could work with an allergist, as well as possibly put me in the hospital and infuse it over a 24 hour period.  So, no, this is not uncommon at all.

Best wishes.

On cycle number 10 (taxol and carbo) , I started to have a reaction to Carbo as well, felt body start to get hot and "itching attack" where my arms and legs felt like being bittens by an army of ants and my heart beating faster than usual...I would describe it as my body starting to go into shock...Nurse slowed the drip down and after 5 minutes all was back to normal.  For cycle 11 and 12, I requested that drip be slowed down as well, had a small reaction on cycle 11 but cycle 12 lasted longer and the next 2 days did not feel well, nausea and super tired kicked in.  Seems that if it enters slower the body can accept it but don't know for how long as with each added cycle, reaction got worse.
