Complex Cyst Question

Complex Cyst Question

I was told I have a complex cyst on my right ovary approx 3 by 4 cm. A few years ago my left ovary and uterus was removed due to a benign cyst.  My next appt. isn't until the end of Sept.  Is this too long of a wait since there is a chance it is cancer?  I am 40 years old.  What is the proper procedure for one this size?  Will they watch it a while and put me on BC to see what it does or will they go in right away and take it out. If so what kind of surgery can I expect. I just want to make sure my doc isn't just ignoring the situation.
Thank you

Hi There,
There are many reasons for a cyst on your ovary. The standard first approach for a 3 by 4 cm cyst is to repeat the ultrasound in 2 to 3 months. If it is persistent but not changing in size, it could be watched, if it is gone, then it was a functional cyst (please see my previous comments about different kinds of ovarian cysts). If you are having pain from a persistent ovarian cyst or it is growing, that is a reason to consider removing it.
Usually at age 40, one worries about the risk of blood clots on the birth control pill so that is not a standard practice. It is unlikely to be cancer. I think end of September sounds like a reasonable follow up.
best wishes to you
