Consolidation Therapy

by Mom Ellen, May 19, 2003 12:00AM
Last fall, I was diagnosed with stage IV ovarian cancer.  I have successfully completed the standard protocol of 6 cycles of taxol and carboplatin.  My CA 125 dropped from over 700 (prior to the debulking operation) to the normal range within the second cycle and now stands at 15.  My CAT scan shows no visible cancer.  As of this time, there has been no second look operation.  The doctor says I am on schedule.

I am told that I may improve my chances through "consolidation" therapy - primarily additional chemotherapy.  I have heard about reports by Dr. Markman of a trial, now terminated, of continuing taxol for 3 to 12 additional monthly cycles. I have also been told of Intraperitoneal (IP) chemotherapy with cisplatin. I have also been told I could be eligible for several phase II or phase III trials with fairly sophisticated but unproven new drugs.

I would appreciate tremendously your sharing of any thoughts but particularly your general experience or recommendations with respect to any extended taxol or IP cisplatin consolidation therapies.
