Desperately Seeking Answers

My mother was diagnosed with ovarian cancer 18 months ago.  Her doctors have never informed her of the type of ovarian cancer or the stage.  All we know is that her CA-125 was almost 6,000 and that it had spread throughout the abdominal cavity and was on the surface of the liver.  She had 11 taxol/carbo treatments which ended in November 2002 and then a hysterectomy after the CA-125 fell within normal range.  However, since treatment ended, the CA-125 has continued to rise until it is now 230.  Although the CAT scans show nothing, she will begin treatment with either Doxil or Topotecan.
The doctors have told her that her type of OVCA has a history of being difficult to find on CAT scans because the tumors are not actually masses but are more like a fungus.  (Her first CAT scan 18 months ago showed nothing; the second scan only two weeks later showed it throughout the abdominal cavity.)  What type of ovarian cancer is this likely to be since it doesn't form masses?  I'm frustrated because we live in separate cities and it's difficult to speak with her doctors since I feel my mother doesn't really want to know the type and stage.  Knowing the possible type of OVCA she has would help me deal with her illness better and perhaps prepare me for what I may face one day.
I appreciate any information you can give me.  Thank you.

I suppose the stage was IIIc at the beginning with your information because it was spread even on the liver surface.

and I suppose the histologic type might be 'papillary serous carcinoma' which usually spreads throughout abdominal cavity irrespective of forming a mass.

anyway, the initial stage and histologic type is not that important, it's just for your information. I think she's having relapse and she's suppose to get a chemotherapy again.

the prognosis is so guarded in the case like this.

I wish you luck.
