Elevated CA125

I am a 51yr. old that has just recently been diagnosed with an 10cm. solid mass on an ovary.  My CA125 was 420.  My gynecologist referred me to a gynecologist oncologist.  After reviewing my CT scan and sonogram, and a pelvic exam, he said that there was a very good chance that the mass was a bening fibroma. I will be having surgery to remove the mass in 2 weeks.  My concern is that I was under the impression that if my CA125 was that elevated, it most often indicated that there was a malignancy. Am I being overly concerned?

HI again,

Thought I would let you that I am 3 weeks post surgery and am doing fine.  I ended up having a 10cm cellular fibroma mass on left ovary and a smaller cellular fibroma on my right ovary.  Both ovaries were removed along with some scar tissue from a previous partial hysterectomy.  Frozen section during surgery was bening, but Dr. sent all of it for further pathology report.
Received great news that all was bening.  My problem is that my DR. did a follow up CA125 and it was still 85.2.  Down from the initial 440, but still elevated.  He was not sure why it was still elevated.  Dr. wanted me to have another test in a month.  I just wondered if this was unusual or if I should still worry?  Thought all was OK!!

thats what my consultant did with me! the size of it and because it was a solid mass meant i got my operation within 3 weeks of diagnosis and that was a good result (UK NHS is very hit and miss on treatments)

good luck and i hope everything goes well for you let me know how things go for you.

Hi there!

Thanks for the info.  Read about elevated CA125. Oncolologist said that he would approach surgery the same way whether it was malignant or bening because of its size.

Just seem to read alot about elevated CA125 and ovarian cancer.

Hoping all is fine and I will be back to normal soon!  All of this is just so scary!!

I had the same thing as you a 10cm solid mass (thankfully not cancerous)

I asked about the ca 125 test and i got told that it was a guideline test and could sometimes prove unreliable. Your reading is higher than it should be (i THINK the guideline is 35) but from research i have done people who have cancer have it in the 1000's.

good luck my prayers are with you i understand fuly what you are going threw. please let me know how you get on.

easier said than done i know but try not to worry about things until you know for definate.

take care
