Endometriosis

Hi Dr. Goodman,
I had surgery for very mild endometriosis a year ago and was put on low estrogen birth control continuously. I was doing very well until about a month ago. I had made an appointment with my GYN and went 4 days without the pill b/c I was out of refills. I figured I will just get the refills the day of my appointment. My endo symptoms then started slowly coming back. I went back on the pill immediately on the 4th day, but i guess it was too late. Now the symptoms have gotten worse and my doctor has given me two options: surgery or Lupron. I chose Lupron b/c I'm trying to avoid surgery at all costs, especially knowing that there is no guarantee the endo won't come back. My endo is very small too, one tiny area close to my bladder. I have read a bunch of good comments about Lupron, and some downright terrifying. I have spoken to some women who had the treatment for 6 months and they say it helped a lot. I'm planning to go back on the birth control after the Lupron. I know every medication has its side effects, and it doesn't mean one will get them all. How familiar are you with this drug? I will be getting the 3.75 mg for 6 months. Plus add-back therapy. Because of endometriosis I am missing graduation and I'm miserable b/c my pain is severe and debilitating and I need to do something about it before it takes over my life. I would appreciate your expert opinion very much!

that sounds like a tough situation.
Ultimately, the cure for endometriosis is the complete surgical removal of the uterus, fallopian tubes, and ovaries. Until you are ready for that, your doctor is offering you appropriate alternatives.
