Enlarged Ovary and Complex Mass

My mom is post-menopausal in her 70's.  For about 40 years she had a cyst on her ovary.  Just recently she went for her annual exam and they found another cyst - I believe a complex mass AND her ovary is enlarged.  Since last year everything appeared normal, this is a relatively new development.  She went for a couple of scans and had blood work done.  I dont know what her CA-125 level is - though I know that in itself cant diagnose anything...it could be a false positive or negative result.

Anyway, my mom feels fine and has no symptoms except for a very very slight discharge...which could be from the cyst.

She is having the ovary removed because it must be biopsied.

My question is....is she likely going to be ok?  I know they must remove the ovary because you cant fool around with this as this can be suspicious....but is the liklihood that its all benign?

Thank you.

There is always hope my overy is being removed due to a cyst and like they told her they check it once its out.If it was serious they would have had her in sergery (surgery) that same day(I think)and anyways thats just precedures!keep the faith!

P.S the girls are usually pretty quick to help out those with a little more expearence then me just keep checking someone will respond and help ease you a little more and in the meantime we will be praying for your mom

Thank you hershe.  I will keep you in my prayers as well.

Well I dont know about the same day thing....but it seems like there is a rush to get her into surgery - which I think is general protocol since this could potentially be serious and they shouldnt dilly dally anyway.

Im trying to find out what her CA-125 level is.

She seems brave....she is handling better than I am...when I talk to her she sounds calm.  I on the other hand am a basket case.

Id appreciate any comments anyone may have.  I guess its a waiting game but Im praying my mom will be ok.  I love her so much and wish she didnt have to deal with any of this.

Thanks again.

I am so touched by your love for your mom.   I know you are looking for someone to tell you everthing will be fine and of course none of us knows what tomorrow will bring.  But is there a decent chance she will be ok?  Yes I would think that there is as good a chance as any.   A very good friend of my Mother's was diagnosed with OVCA about the same age - she had surgery and chemo and that was five years ago.  I am new to all of this too and playing the waiting game.   But I am learning to hug the ones you love and not worry about tomorrow.  The fact that your mother has a daughter that loves her so much is going to be a huge factor in her favor if in fact this turns out to be anything (which, remember, it could end up being nothing).  So just keep heaping on the love and know that you are giving her the best medicine of all.

Here is a site that has very good explanations for these type of things.  It always helps to learn about the problem so as to be more informed on the desission making process.

Have you heard anything about the CA125?  Is your mom in pain?  You and she are in my prayers.

Her CA-125 is over 500.....She has no symptoms with the exception of a little discharge.  They see her original cyst, a complex mass and her enlarged ovary.  She had a CT scan and all other vital organs like the liver, kidney etc appear normal.  She happened to go to her family doctor 2 weeks before and even though that bloodwork didnt include the CA-125....everything else checked out normal so there was no hint of anything abnormal going on so Im praying this thing has been contained.  The only thing is that she has a thick omentum.....could it be cancer or could it be she just happens to have a thick omentum?
