Fallopian Tube Cancer StageIIIC

Fallopian Tube Cancer StageIIIC

My mother was diagnosed with fallopian tube cancer(glandular cell,StageIII C ,and grade 3 )in August,2005.The surgury was done in august 2005,which included total abdominal hysterectomy and bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy with omentectomy and debulking of as much gross tumor as can safely be performed. The tumor size was 7x3cm.
Her CA125 before surgury was 193.
Immediately after the surgury, she had 3 periods of Chemotherapies using Taxol, together with 3 periods of Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy using carboplatin.
Her CA125 dropped to 30 after the second chemotherpy and rised to 60 after the third chemo.
In her fourth chemotherapy, oxaliplatin and topotecan was used, but it proved to be ineffective because CA125 continued to rise from 60 to 800.
In the 5th and 6th chemo, doxorubicin HCl was used but it again proved to be ineffective as after the 6th chemo CA125 rised to more than 1000.
So in march 2006,after 6 unsuccessful chemotherapies, the doctors in local hospital advised my mother to give up chemotherapy, and then she started to take chinese herbal medicine and the only treatment for her cancer.
On March 30th,MRI showed that tumor had spreaded to her liver.
and on July 4th,MRI showed uronephrosis in both her kidneys ,small tumors in her lung membrane and quite a lof of tumors in her pelvic cavity.CA125 2600.
Local doctors have almost given up treatments on my mother, and announced that my mother has only got several months left, which put us in great desperation.
What should we do now?Any new options of treatment?
Any advice would be appreciated! Many thanks!

Dear Allie, I am so sorry to hear about the difficult time that your mother and , I am sure, your whole family has gone through. It sounds like she has gotten very good therapy. Unfortunately, her cancer is behaving  in a manner which we label "chemotherapy resistant".

There are other chemotherapy agents such as taxotere, gemzar, cytoxan. But I wonder whether the best approach for your mother would be to consider a research trial with a new agent.
If your hospital does not have clinical trials, you could research trials on the web. the best place to look is PDQ which is the National Cancer Institute website for clinical trials .

Having said that, as hard as this is,it is important to think about how your mother is doing overall, right now.  It may be, that therapy will not help your mother. I apologize for being so open about this but I think it is important to think about these things.

If your mother has a limited time left to her life, what would she want to do? Are there important legal and family tasks  and goals that really must be taken care of? Are there conflicts that should be resolved?

I would suggest working on finding new therapies but at the same time looking inward at the possibility that this cancer may not be treatable. Think about whether you and your family need help with emotional and spiritual support as well. Most cancer centers have excellent social work services for counseling. You can also call the American cancer society if you are in the USA. They can tell you what support groups are active in your neighborhood.
best wishes to you
