Family history of ovarian cancer at a young age

Hi,  My mum was diagnosed with ovarian cancer when she was 36 and unfortunately she passed away after 4 years of chemo. I was very young at the time, however I'm now 20 and in the past its been mentioned to me that her Dr's believe it is genetic (possibly a mutation) and I should be tested at the appropriate age.

Recently i've been getting really sharp pain every night in my abdominal area (right on my right ovary), which according to my Dad was the only sypthom my Mum ever had. I understand that I am really young, but I'm wondering considering what happened to my Mum if they would be willing to test me now?   I'm very nervous about going to the GP, I'm scared their either laugh at me or  it could turn out to be something serious.

I wanted to try and find out what they might say or do with my situation ?

Many thanks

I would encourage you to see someone.  It is better to find out now if it is something serious because it could be treated early rather than possible to late.  I do not know any doctor that would laugh at you.  Also by seeing the doctor it will also release all the stress you are feeling now.

I agree with the comments above.  Also:

If it's genetic testing you're after, there's no age that's too young.  I would insist on getting tested for BRCA-1 and -2 since your mother had ovca at such a young age.

You also need to make your gynecologist and primary care doctor aware of your family history.  You could occasionally have the Ca-125 blood test (although it's notoriously unreliable prior to diagnosis by other means) and/or a transvaginal ultrasound looking at the ovaries.

And you should head straight to the doctor whenever you have any symptoms of ovarian cancer, even though they are very vague and could be related to other causes.  Please be pro-active about this.
