Follow up results from sonogram

by Barb38, May 15, 2007 12:00AM
Hello again – I just had a follow up sonogram and I'm not sure what it all means and I haven't heard back from my doctor. I've added the current and the previous sonogram results.

Current - May 8, 2007 Sonogram results:
Currently, transvaginal scans were obtained.  The uterus was retroverted and retroflexed, the endometrium measured 11mm, secretory.  There were no definite focal fibroids.
The left ovary measured 2.9 x 2.5 x 1.6 cm and appeared homogeneous with 1 or 2 very tiny follicles.  The right ovary measured 2.9 x 2.0 x 1.1 cm.  There were no dominant cystic or solid masses here.  A tiny capsular calcification was seen, benign.  There was a trace amount of free fluid, likely physiologic.
Interval resolution of the previously noted complex cysts.  No definite uterine or adnexal masses.  Trace free fluid is likely physiologic.

Previous - March 11, 2007 Sonogram results:
The uterus was noted to be retroverted and retroflexed. Double width measurement of the endometrium was 11 mm, secretory. There were no definite focal fibroids.
The right ovary overall measured 3.2 x 2.5 x 1.5 cm. Within this ovary there was a complex cyst with several linear echos suggesting a hemorrhagic cyst measuring 1.7 x 1.6 x 1.4 cm. The left ovary measured 3.5 x 2.7 x 4.1 cm. There was a similar complex cyst with a few linear echos measuring 2.0 x 2.0 x 1.8 cm. A small amount of free fluid was seen, probably physiologic.
Short term follow up, preferable in the early phase of the cycle is recommended.

My questions are:
What is capsular calcification and even though it is tiny will it be a problem later on?
What is going on with the left ovary and are the tiny follicles going to turn into cyst?
Why is my endometrium still at 11 mm, secretory or is this a reference to the previous sonogram?

Thanks again for all of the help
Barb

Dear Barb,
it sounds like you have some resolving cysts on your ovaries. calcification may be a small scar on the ovary, a tiny dermoid. The lining of your uterus does seem thick. It may be reasonable to consider a biopsy of your uterine lining. Commonly women have benign polyps that can cause that thickening. Ask you doctor about doing an office biopsy
