Frequent urination, other possible symptoms

I am a 20 year old woman with no history of any ovarian problems. For the last six months, however, I have been the victim of frequent UTIs- ie, up to five in three months. By the last one, the doctor couldn't detect any actual infection in the urine and suggested that the symptoms (frequent, urgent, burning urination) could be due to frequent/rough sexual intercourse.  I have been celibate for the past few months in the hope that this would help, and it has- however, I still get the urge to pee frequently. I have read that this could be a symptom of ovarian cancer. Did anybody here experience this symptom? I have also been concerned of very occasional mild pain in the general area of my right-hand ovary, as well as increased gas. Should I be concerned?

Thanks for any help/advice you can offer. I am praying for us all!

Hey galie, thanks for your reply. The pain in my side has gone away and my doc told me that there was no enlarged ovary to start with and that the radiologist was wrong. So we'll see how we go. Im 27 yrs old and dont wanna be dealing with this sort of thing.

But come what may, and thanks for your concern.

I feel so bad for you ladies. Do you have mothers to talk to about this stuff? If you do I would suggest it. I would be pounding down the doctor's door with my daughter( she is 22)  til I got an answer. Sometimes unfortunately young people are pushed aside because no one likes to think of them as being sick. Especially with something like cancer.
Take your mother, an aunt, or someone else that you trust who is a bit older and doesn't feel so pushed around by doctors and has the experience to know what questions to ask.  Make sure you get the answers to your questions and keep asking until it makes sense.
Good luck

I know exacly what you are going through. I have been suffering frequent urination for many years now with no apparent signs of infection. The other day i had enough with the pain and my doc sent me to do an ultrasound. The ultrasound indicated that i have an enlarged left ovary but the radioligist told me that he could not see any cysts and that i need a transvaginal test done. Not sure if you know what that is, but its a probe they insert into your vagina and see your reproductive organs. This apprently is the most reliable test of all, HOWEVER the problem is....I AM A VIRGIN too, so that would break my hymen and i dont particually want that. So now i am as confused as you are as to what my options are. I am terrified that i have ovarian cancer. You need to change docs. The one you went to sounds like an exhausted ***** on a power trip. Please let me know what happens with you. NOTE..i am having nose surgery to remove a bump after a fracture which i was so excited about, and now that this has come up, im not excited anymore. That in 2 weeks time. Keep me updated. Maybe we can help one another.

hi all,

I am really concerned about my health.. I'm 24 years old and I am a virgin. .Around the end of April 2007, I started to notice slight painful discomfort in my pelvic region I started noticing that I was  holding my pelvic area sometimes.  I never experienced sensations like this ever in my life!!.  I did some research online about my symptoms and  concluded that I had a UTI and decided to go to the GYN, she wasnt that helpful, she took a urinalysis and gave me meds for a UTI.. I took the meds and felt slightly better but the symptoms came right back.  I decided to get a second opionion so I went to another GYN who again gave me some meds and sent me on my way, telling me my test results came back normal.  I ended up going to the  ER because I couldnt take it anymore and thought that a hospital could help me out.  The doctors there gave me a prescription for some meds and wanted me to immediately see a urologist.  I went to the Urologist and he found nothing but the normal bacteria in the urine.  He eventually sent me to another urologist , in the mean time  a  couple of days before my visit with my new doctor I had to urinate 17 times in one night
!!) I was exhausted!!!   The new doctor seemed to  be knowledgible and immediately set me up for a MRI scanning of my pelvis.  She gave me samples of Detrol LA and sent me on my way.. When I finally went back to her for my appointment I felt a little better but I was still having symptoms which involved frequent urination during the day and especially at night (but it slowed down a lot), small and large amounts or urine, ammonia like odors in my urine, dull pain in my pelvis (uterus area) my urethra opening appeared to be slightly swollen, my sides felt mild pain if I didnt reach the bathroom fast enough  and I'd also  get a bit headachey if i didnt reach the restroom fast enough and slight traces of blood in my urine..  and on most of my test they found blood in my urine  which they concluded as being mestrual bleeding.. Although I couldnt see the blood  sometimes(my periods are super irregular)  and on top of it all the second week of using Detrol LA I came on what I presumed  as my period  that lasted for 18 days straight (i marked it on my calendar)!!  My doctor brushed over my MRI results telling me that everything came back normal except for slight cyst on my ovaries which she said was normal during mestruation?? I wasnt sure what to say!! I felt slightly rushed and as though she wanted to give me a quick answer! I felt so helpless. iam scared and worried!! I  asked her about endometriosis and other illnesses that I had symptoms for and she brushed them off by telling me that most of those illnesses involve severe pain!!  then she told me that it could be  kidney stone trying to pass through.. shouldnt she have done a test? i felt cheated..  iam worried sick about  my health.. i  know something is wrong!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am not sure exactly what test  I should ask for?.. i felt so low and helpless in her office, she kept staring me down as if she wanted to say 'ok i told you something now get out' dont get me wrong she didnt have a mean tone of voice but I dont think she really reviewed my results carefully until the day of my check up.. someone please help..im in nyc.. does anybody know of any GYNs urologist who listen? what other type of  doctor should I see?? lately my bathroom visits have toned down slightly, but Im feeling like a gas like pain in my uterus or something.. when i finally do go and pee I often  pass gass which relieves some of the pain in my stomach then it takes a couple seconds for the urine to come down like its trying to get past something blocking it.  its just not normal, i know my body and i was not like this at the beggining of the year.. im sad and worried!

Hi, umm
Well I am 18 years old and Im not on any kind of bcp. birth control pills or anything and I am still a virgin and all. I have had constipation and lower back pain for going on maybe 4 or so years and my daddy had been taking me to the doctor when it would get painful to me for not using the bathroom...but every time I went they said it was " Nothing" and they would put me on an IBS perscription. Well that didn't work so then I changed my diet a little. Well back in June of last year I wen't on what was supposed to be a normal low calorie diet, but I went way over board. I was 198lbs in June by november I was 143lbs . I was taking in about on average 790 calories per day. Well Then I started having very heavy bleeding on my menstrual cycle and that month of september I had three periods that lasted about nine days. My dad took me to a gyn. and they said that the only thing they saw was a little bit of kidney stones and that other than that I was normal and it was prolly my eating habits taking my body out of wack. Well it's been way over a year and Im healthier than i was then bc. I have gained some weight back and I am now 155lbs. But I have developed problems again. I bloat over every single thing I eat ....sometimes I even avoid food around my boyfriend because I know that even eating one banana can set off the bloating like crazy. I pee A LOT I mean I drink a lot but even when I don't drink a lot I can pee 3 times in just 20 or 30 minutes. A few days ago I went to the restroom and I had a clear discharge with strinky blood in it. and My very very lower extremities hurt so bad. When I hurt down there if I stand up the pain shoots up my navel to just below my breast and my lower back has an uncomfortable achey feeling and it hurts. And like right now I want to have a bowel movement so bad and I need too but Im so sore in the vaginal area that it hurts to apply pressure...so I avoid using the restroom which just adds to my constipation....Somebody got any idea of what this could be..............thanks in advace..sorry so long

Hi liliana5121.

I was diagnosed with Ovarian Cancer back in May 2006. I am 27 years old. I went to my doctor on numerous occasions about a few different symptoms I was having. I didn't have frequent urination or UTI's but I was having blood in my stool. My doctor told me that it was just polyps and not to worry. I had a colonoscopy booked for 4 months later. I went back again a couple of weeks after that with abdominal pain and real bad lower back pain. He told me it was my weight. I went to Emerg at my local hospital that following weekend and they performed an emergency ultrasound on me only to find large masses on both ovaries. They bumped my colonoscopy up to 2 weeks after my visit to the hospital and found a blockage. They took a tissue sample for a biopsy and it came back malignant (cancer). Within 2 weeks I had a complete hysterectomy and partial bowel removal. The blood in my stool was caused from the cancer spreading into my colon.
DO NOT WAIT AND PUSH YOUR DOCTOR TO TAKE ALL TESTS NECESSARY TO FIND OUT WHAT IS WRONG.
My cancer was graded a Stage 3 and had I waited until my scheduled colonoscopy, I might not be here today.

Hello there...please listen to the ladies who have already responded to your query....YOU HAVE ONE CHANCE TO GET IT RIGHT THE FIRST TIME.....go to a gyn/oncoligist....this is their field of expertise....for optimal results and prognosis you need to be talking to a gyn/oncologist..they deal with much more than cancer....especially since most tumors are benign....99% are benign so no reason for panic....find out what is going on but if surgery is in the cards...get a gyn/onc to do it.
Peace.

In July, My one and only and original symptom was constant feeling of urination. I went to a urologist who did a u/s, which found the large (grapefruit) complex cyst pressing on my bladder. Cyst was  surgically removed which definitely alleviated the pressure. Of course I had a onc/gyn remove it just to be safe. I still need to go back to the urologis for a urine test now that the cyst is gone. I had a slight trace of blood in my urine, but it probably was seepage from the cyst. Good Luck!

I have to go with everyone else... You need to see a gyn, since frequent urination is a symptom of ovarian cysts as well as OvCa. I had a large endometrial cyst that was leaning on the bladder, worse when I was sitting, that made me go constantly. Was checked for UTI... no infection.
So, go get checked by a gyn... Even if it turns out to be nothing, you'll feel much better knowing.

I agree with everyone else here.  I had a UTI and the antibiotics didn't get rid of it completely.  My Dr. felt around and thought I had a hernia or ovarian cyst.  We discovered through U/S and CT scan that I had a softball sized dermoid cyst. I am 26 also, but it was benign- there was a spot in it that the dr was very concerned about.  They could see my ovaries on the U/S so they ordered a CT scan and knew within 3 hours what it was.

Hi there... Not to frighten you, but I got dignosed twice with a bladder infection (even though my urine tests came back negative!) and it turned out to be stage IIIc Ovarian Cancer - I was 26yrs old, no family history of ANY cancer. This is obviously an extreme case, but my point is, you know your body best. If you really feel as though something is wrong, don't let the Dr's brush your concerns under the rug. Ask for a Trans/vaginal ultrasound or, at the very least, an appointment with a gyne. (or better yet, a gyne/onc, as Tascha mentioned). My pains and symptoms were in my bladder because I had a large tumor growing into it - they had to remove a part of my bladder during my surgery because it had attached itself. I think back over the years and how many times I had UTI's and just went to the Dr, and asked for a prescription - no tests or anything. I had a slow growing cancer, yet it was so advanced when they found it - I can only wonder how long it had been growing. Please get this checked out.

Hi and welcome!  I would suggest a 2nd opinion with a gyn/onc anyway.  They are specialists in women's gyn issues and have seen it all.  A cyst could be pressing on the bladder in a way that it cannot empty all the way and thus causes the uti.

For the past year and a half I'd been having severe pain in the pelvic area esp around right half of lower abdomen and in the bowel.  I was told it was IBS and put on tablets which did relieve the symptoms.

However in March of this year I was put on anti-biotics for a mild UTI.  It cleared it up but the pain did not go away and I still had to go to the toilet frequently.   I had to do angry middle-aged woman and was determined I wasn't leaving until I got an appointment with a gyn.  I wouldn't mind but 16 years ago I'd lost an ovary and fallopian tube because of a granulosa cell tumour.  This time it was a recurrence but it came from the old scar. The tumour was resting on the bladder.  I had my surgery 8 weeks ago to remove the tumour/scar and check the bladder.  Glad to say that all went well.

You must be forceful with your doctor and push for a referral and scan.  Tell her/him you feel that it has not resolved and you would like a second opinion.  Good luck.

My advice would be to ask your doctor for an u/s and tvus. I am not aware of cysts causing uti's but certainly the other symptoms you describe.
