Genetic testing question

by babeblue94, Nov 09, 2009 12:34PM
Has anyone has the genetic testing done?  If it comes out positive for the mutation, can the insurance companies refuse to treat you going forward?

http://ornl.gov/sci/techresources/Human_Genome/medicine/genetest.shtml   has a lot of information and many links.  http://www.ncsl.org/IssuesResearch/Health/GeneticNondiscriminationinHealthInsuranceLaws/tabid/14374/Default.aspx  has all states listed and the laws they have to protect people against insurance companies.

I have had it and with medical advances, they are finding drugs to use against specific genes  (such as PARP inhibitors), I think it will be a huge benefit.   They are working on blanket legislation to protect everyone, I haven't been negatively effected in PA. Do your research for your state because things change and I hope you find the help you need.  If the links above don't work for you. let me know.  Take care, Angie

I don't think so.  Just because you have a gene mutation doesn't mean you have a pre-existing condition.

Thank you for your reply and the website information.  Did your insurance company cover your test and do you have the gene?

You welcome.  My insurance paid for the test and I have the BRAC1 gene.  The genetic counselor wrote a letter to the insurance company so they would pay for it and they gave me a one month window in which they would pay as long as I had it done during that month.  I was at Magee Women's Hospital, which is run by UPMC.  My insurance was UPMC too, so that helped.

If you have anymore questions, let me know,

Sending hugs, Angie

I had testing - negative for braca 1 and 2. Still got ovarian!  I feel there are genes that are to be discovered!  Good  luck.

I had the BRCA 1 .. no ovarian or breast gene .. .however, I am primary peritoneal (treated and looks like ovarian) .. insurance company paid for it.
