Granulosa cell Tumor-Moderately differentiated

by WH in Canada, Dec 19, 2003 12:00AM
I am 48 years having had only one pregnancy at 33 years. Last spring I had a period for the first time in over two years. My GP sent me for an ultrasound including a transvaginal. The left ovary appeared enlarged and the Dr. thought we should keep an eye on it. Also had a uterine biopsy done w/negative results. In Sept, 2003 I started to hemmorage and a D&C was performed by an OB/GYN. I had 2nd US/TV which revealed ovary was now larger with unusual blood supply.  Over four weeks ago I had a full hysterectomy, incl cervix, tubes and Left ovary. (R-ovary removed 28 years ago due to huge cyst) No nodes removed or washings were done as the OB/GYN was confident ovary appeared benign. The results came back Granulosa Cell Tumor - Moderately Differentiated. The OB/GYN said not to worry as tumor was stage 1 - fully excised.  The moderately differentiated has me worried though.  Samples were sent to cancer clinic for 2nd opinion, however, no results so far. How can a proper staging be done if surrounding tissue and washings were not examined? Between hot flashes and anxiety, I haven't slept much in the past month. Am I worrying and over reacting over nothing?

My sister is 18 and has had Juvenile Granulosa Cell Tumor since she was 16.  The tumor started on her left ovary.  She had it removed along with 9 liters of fluid that had leaked from the back of the tumor.  That was in June of 2002.  In Febuary of 2003 they found another tumor.  She had surgery to remove it and was put on chemo afterwards because there were tiny tumors on her abdomine wall.  She had chemo for about 6 months which consisted of Cisplatin, Bleomycin, and Etoposide (VP16).  After the 6 months all her test looked clear.  In December of 2003 there was another tumor, she had it removed and again tiny tumors were found.  She is going through chemo for a second time.  It consist of Carboplatin and Paciltaxel.  If you know of any successful treatments of this cancer could you please contact me.  Since her tumors are so small Cat scans can't pick them up.  The doctors told us that she needed a PET scan to determine where the cancer is, but her insurance won't cover the bill and the test is exteremly expensive.  If you have information on medical grants or organizations that help out please contact me.

Thank you,
Britney Howard

Hi,

I'm 54 years old and have been dealing with granulosa cell tumors for almost 20 years. I've had 5 surgeries, and been through chemo twice.

I'm interested in alternative therapies that had some success with this rare type of tumor: vaccine, hormone, mistletoe, imatinib...

Thanks, Vic
