Health Anxiety/Complex Cyst DX

by Bon193, Feb 18, 2008 03:37PM
Hi gals!

I will try to make my story short in the hopes that someone will reply!  I had been having my January period for way longer than normal, so I went to the doctor - she felt because of my age (42) that the long period was highly due to fluctuating hormones, or possibly a fibroid (benign) - she sent me to get a pelvic and transvaginal ultrasound, and the report (I have a copy of) came back saying I have a complex cyst on my right ovary - it measures 2 x 3 x 3 - the doctor knows I deal with health anxiety and she said that there is nothing to get worried about because if the radiologist was concerned about what he saw he would have mentioned "suspicious findings", etc. and he didn't.  I have "surfed" until I am practically burned out.  It's frustrating and scary because I keep reading how complex cysts can sometimes be cancerous.  My mom died from leukemia 2 years ago, so the word "cancer" sends me into high anxiety mode!  Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated!  (They suggest follow-up u/s in 6 weeks from date of initial u/s, but I saw my gyn the other day and for my peace of mind, she agreed to do an u/s a week from Thursday).

hugs,

Good for you for being proactive!  I'm glad you consulted with your gyn and are having an ultrasound next week.

As for comforting words, 2x3x3 is TINY in terms of anything cancerous. Lucky you!  Woohoo!

All of us have been scared to death at times throughout medical testing, especially when we have to await a test. The days go by too slowly.  So, keep yourself busy, active and healthy.

Know what really helped me through the waiting times?  Exercise.  I went to the gym almost every day as I proceeded through scary tests.  I'm convinced that my  recovery (two weeks from a hysterectomy) and treatments, which were kinda easy, benefitted greatly from my anxiety-fueled workouts!!!

Best of luck to you.  Please keep the forum updated on your progress!
Hugs, SurvivorSusie

Hey girl,

Have you had any CBT for the health anxiety issues? I bet they developed after mom died? Persistent introspection regarding all bodily changes can have a huge impact on your well being and quality of life. I think this issue demands more attention than the cyst which is almost certainly benign. I have alot of experience with anxiety related issues if you would like to post me privately I would be more than happy to chat.

You both are awesome!  Thank you so much for your replies!  Susie, you are an inspiration!  I never thought much about hitting the gym - I just need to get off my butt and do it!

Anna-Maria - I have been seeing a therapist for my health anxiety - I am also on Effexor - and you are right on!  I used to be a little more cautious about my health, but thinking back, it certainly increased (along with the anxiety) after my mom died.  When I get a chance I will certainly post you privately!)

big hugs to both of you!
