Hemmoraghic cyst, pain, should i get a 2nd opinion?

by karden, Sep 14, 2006 12:00AM
I am going to copy/paste a response i left for rackburt:
i've had alot of pain in my general abdomenal (abdominal) area for about the last 3 months. Finally went to ob/gyn & had an internal, but wound up getting my pd right before the appt,so she didn't do a PAP.By the time I had my follow up appt a week later for the Pap,I had this incredible amt of pain with my bladder.I had been aware that all of my abdominal pain for the last several months increased dramatically when my bladder was full, but this was definitely an increase in pain/pressure.It felt very much like a bladder infection to me,so she took a urine & said the white blood cell count was elevated & there was a moderate amount of blood.Wrote me a scrip for Macroban, but sent me to get a more detailed urine test first. That test came back as totally normal-no infection!Because of all the pain that I have been having, she sent me for a transvaginal ultrasound as well. She also sent me for mammogram & breast ultrasound, saying she felt density in my left breast-I was a wreck by the time I left the office!Today I had my follow up, she said mammogram & ultrasound were fine-just dense tissue. The transvaginal ultrasound showed a hemmorhagic cyst (18 mm i think?) on the right ovary (which is definitely where pains are sharper),they were unable to see the left ovary b/c of bowel.Much like Tina800, she gave me the free box of Yasmine & scheduled me for a follow up in 3 months. Also, tells me to take lots of Advil when my pain feels alot like early labor pains!I have to say that I am just really paranoid. You all seem to be so aware of what's going on!I am a 41 yr old mom of 3 girls (15 yr; 5 yr & 3 yr old) and just am so totally exhausted & also very grumpy because I'm in a constant source of pain. My marriage is definitely affected because I am just so grumpy or depressed from pain & I never want to have sex anymore, since it usually produces even worse cramping afterward. My poor girls just want me to be their happy fun mommy again & I'm so preoccupied with fear

Hi have had similar symptoms to yours but on my right side.  Collapsed a fortnight ago, they think a cyst ruptured and bled into the abdomen.  Anyway, insisted on seeing a gynae who said he thought it was a haemorrhagic cyst but the only way to be certain was to have a look, and as I was symptomatic (in pain) then that would be better than a 'wait and see' approach.  Scheduled for surgery 2 November, he is reassuring that he feels it is a cyst and nothing more sinister - my cyst is 2.5cm x 2cm but will investigate due to the pain.  Your pain is clearly having an adverse effect on your ability to carry out your normal day to day routine and so it would seem reasonable to question whether a laparoscopy to remove the cyst (even though it is small) would be reasonable.

You should not have to spend the next however many months/years managing pain if this is not necessary, at least that was my comment to my gynae!

The best advice I received on this site was to lay your fears out in black and white to your gynae.  I was worried about the risk of cancer and so I asked him directly and was firm that for me, it was unacceptable to be left in pain.

Hope this helps, take care

thanks very much! it does seem a bit crazy to be in pain when there is an alternative!!

Pain should never be an option!  You should get a 2nd opinion from a gyn/onc as they are specialists in women's gyn issues and have seen everything.  Even though 99% of ovarian cysts are benign, you are wise in seeking medical attention.

were you referred to an urologist due to the blood in your urine?  blood in urine minus an infection needs to be evaluated.  maybe you have some inflammation problems in your bladder?
