Emend is wonderful.  It comes in a 3 pill package.  Your Mom should NOT take the first pill until she is actually in the chemo room and knows 100% she will be getting chemo that day.  (Sometimes there are reasons to hold up chemo .. like low blood counts).  Please have Mom wait to take the FIRST pill until she gets to the chemo room.  The remaining pills can be taken at home .. just wait to take the FIRST pill until she is in the chemo room and is sure she is strong enough for chemo Day 1.

Aloxi is a great drug for nausea and is given in the IV.

I had both of these drugs for Cisplatin/Taxol .. and then later for Carboplatinum/Taxotere.

She should also have a script for nausea pills to take at home if she needs them.  Just remember that the chemo and nausea pills can be constipating .. another potential problem so don't overdo them at home.

Good luck and God Bless.

Judy

I also took emend only during cisplatin. I had it during chemo and took it for 2 days afterwards. I still had some nausea though as time went by.
I am sure that your moms Dr will be keeping a close eye on her and may even put off the chemo for a few days if she feels she is not quite ready. Hopefully they will get her straightened out and ready to go when she is supposed to.

I took Emend orally during my Cisplatin chemo.  It kept me from vomiting.  I never did.  I felt a icky and had trouble findind things to eat, but it helped control the nausea. I also had I/V Aloxi during treeatment.  Marie

Everyone is different, and Zofran has worked for me through carbo/taxol and Topotecan.
With C/T I needed it every 5 hours, round the clock for 3 days after each treatment.

With Topo. i took one the evening I had chemo and that usually was enough, on occasion I needed another a day or 2 later.

They gave me pre meds, IV before each chemo treatmen as well.

Just keep a water bottle near her at all times, and have her even take a sip constantly
if that's all she can do.

Good luck to Mom,
Jane

Worked good for me first round.  Not so good this time.  Christina is right, they don't usually prescribe, Zofran is the drug of choice but did not make a DENT in my nausea.  Emend and Aloxi in the IV combo is best.

emend was the only thing that kept me out of the hospital. usually you have to fight tooth and nail to get it. even tho i was so sick with nausea they didn't offer it until the 3rd cycle and the insurance gave us a hard time to get it. look on the archieves here....lots of women have had it work when nothing else would.

lots of love,
christina
