Is my daughter okay?

Yesterday was my daughters 20th birthday.  Instead of a bright cheary day, we spent 18 hours in our local emergency room for what doctors and everyone else thought was appendicitus.  After the cat scan and ultrasound we were advised that she had a 7.5 cm mass on her left ovary with septations.  The doctors threw out the cancer word, removing the ovary, and if it was cancer, a complete historectory with radiation and chemotherapy. This doctor was very young and referred us to her gyn for follow-up.  Was this doctor jumping the gun.  Are these type of cysts normally cancerous?  Of course I am worried sick.

Well, if the medical staff used the term septations, then they likely discovered a complex cyst.   Did anyone specifically state that it was a cyst or a tumor?  I ask because, statistically speaking, cysts have a low probability of being cancerous - only 1 to 2 percent.  The rest of the commentary...removing the cyst and/or ovary with testing for malignant cells and a complete hysterectomy if cancer is found...sounds just like the decisions that I faced last year for a complex cyst (described in various test results as a 'complex cyst with solid components' and as a 'complex solid mass'.)  My mass was a very large endometrioma and it was benign.

The important next step is rapid follow up testing and removal of the mass, whatever it is, by a competent surgeon experienced with gyn-oncology.  Should cancer be found, then the quality of the surgery can determine the quality and quantity of life afterwards.

MY SISTER HAD A VERY LARGE CYST AT THE AGE OF 22 AND THEY TOLD US THEN THAT THESE WERE VERY RARELY CANCEROUSE BUT THERE WAS A CHANCE.  OF COURSE HERS WASN'T.  GOOD LUCK
